Yoga has its roots in ancient India, dating back over 5,000 years. The word “yoga” comes from the Sanskrit word “yuj” meaning “to unite” or “to join.”
The earliest evidence of yoga practices can be traced back to the Indus Civilization, where seals depicting figures in yoga-like poses have been discovered.
During this period, yoga was mentioned in the ancient Hindu scriptures, the Vedas. The Vedic people believed in the concept of uniting the individual self (jiva) with the universal self (Brahman).
Yoga evolved during this period, with the rise of Buddhism and Jainism. The concept of ahimsa (non-violence) and the practice of meditation and asceticism became more prominent.
This period saw the rise of Hatha Yoga, which emphasized physical postures (asanas) and breathing techniques (pranayama). The legendary sage Patanjali wrote the Yoga Sutras, a foundational text of yoga philosophy.
Yoga continued to evolve, with the rise of Tantra Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, and Bhakti Yoga. In the 20th Century, yoga was popularized in the west by gurus like Swami Vivekananda, Paramahansa Yogananda, and B.K.S. Iyengar.
Today, yoga has become a global phenomenon, with various styles and approaches. From Hatha to Vinyasa, Restorative to Yin, yoga has evolved to suit different needs and preferences.
