1. The Ancient Roots of Yoga

Yoga has its roots in ancient India, dating back over 5,000 years. The word “yoga” comes from the Sanskrit word “yuj” meaning “to unite” or “to join.”

2. The Indus Valley Civilization (3000 BCE - 1500 BCE)

The earliest evidence of yoga practices can be traced back to the Indus Civilization, where seals depicting figures in yoga-like poses have been discovered.

3. The Vedic Period (1500 BCE - 500 BCE)

During this period, yoga was mentioned in the ancient Hindu scriptures, the Vedas. The Vedic people believed in the concept of uniting the individual self (jiva) with the universal self (Brahman).

4. The Pre-Classical Period (500 BCE - 200 BCE)

Yoga evolved during this period, with the rise of Buddhism and Jainism. The concept of ahimsa (non-violence) and the practice of meditation and asceticism became more prominent.

5. The Classical Period (200 CE - 1500 CE)

This period saw the rise of Hatha Yoga, which emphasized physical postures (asanas) and breathing techniques (pranayama). The legendary sage Patanjali wrote the Yoga Sutras, a foundational text of yoga philosophy.

6. The Post-Classical Period (1500 CE - present)

Yoga continued to evolve, with the rise of Tantra Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, and Bhakti Yoga. In the 20th Century, yoga was popularized in the west by gurus like Swami Vivekananda, Paramahansa Yogananda, and B.K.S. Iyengar.

Today, yoga has become a global phenomenon, with various styles and approaches. From Hatha to Vinyasa, Restorative to Yin, yoga has evolved to suit different needs and preferences.

I still remember the days when PCOD (Polycystic Ovary Disorder) had taken over my life for 10 years.
I was once trapped in a cycle of hormonal imbalance, physical pain, emotional pain, frustration and helplessness. But, I also remember the day I found yoga. And, how it transformed my life, inside out.

Through yoga, I discovered:

– A calmer, clearer mind
– A more compassionate, connected heart

Yoga helped me heal, both physically and emotionally. It empowered me to take control of my health, my happiness, and my life. And, now, as a yoga teacher, I’m passionate about sharing this transformative power with others.
